Trick or treat? Definitely treat for us!
As we are all aware the 31st of October was Halloween. Its gives everyone a reason to dress up spooky and eat loads of sweet things.
We thought we would bring back the blog posts with something completely different. We concerntrated on making a pretty simple cake but decorating it with a horror theme. The decorating was different and something we hadn’t really challenged ourselves with yet so it was nice to get drawing and designing a cake from scratch.
We had a couple of ideas for decoration but wanted to go with a graveyard sort of scene. We had plenty of ideas for making tombstones and the soil effect but thought there isnt’t really any need for fancy techniques when follwing simple steps can still give you a great finished product.
Simple vanilla sponge. Vanilla buttercream. Fondant. Job done.
We decided to cut a portion of the cake out the middle and fill it with halloween sweets to give an effect of something pouring out. If the cake was taller this could probably have worked better but it gave us the effect we wanted.
We used white fondant icing and red food colouring to make the outer layer. Though it would be advisable to just buy red fondant because ours was a sort of hot pink colour before we left it to set, I don’t think pink would’ve given the right message!
In regards to the crumb we used oreos. we seperated the biscuit from the cream and bashed them up to a fine powder, though leaving a couple of chunks in there gave it a nice gravelly look. We then used the cream from the oreos to decorate the crosses on the gravestones.
The actual gravestones themselves are just rich tea fingers covered in a mix of melted white and dark chocolate. It is literally that easy.
We are going to be doing a bit more decorating in the future. And now GBBO has finished we will be showing offf more of our own bakes.

We hope everybody had an great Halloween!
Love Jordan-Anna and Rob
